HGH and Height in Children and Adults

The children's author Dr. Seuss once wrote, “A person's a person, no matter how small.” But since society tends to admire taller people more than short, no matter what age we are, both adults and children look for ways to improve their height. Some take hormones like synthetic HGH, while others use techniques such as exercises and bone lengthening surgeries. But how much do these methods actually benefit the users? What is the best method for increasing height? In this article, we will try to find out the answers to these important questions.

What is HGH?

HGH stands for human growth hormone. It is a hormone usually produced in the pituitary gland of the human brain, and it regulates how tall we grow from childhood to adulthood. As adults, HGH helps maintain our cell and organ function and the production of bone and muscle. It can also stimulate the immune system and provide other benefits to the body.

The hormone works in two types of cycles. First, HGH is secreted from the pituitary gland in pulses that occur most frequently when an individual is asleep. In the direct cycle, the hormone receptors bind themselves to target cells and increase the growth of bone as well as helping to maintain cell function. The indirect cycle, on the other hand, is where the majority of the HGH that our bodies produce has an effect. During the indirect cycle, the liver converts HGH into Insulin-like Growth Factor Type 1 (IGF-1), which is an important growth factor that can be measured in our blood. It affects the target cells to increase growth and general cell and organ health and function. For more info on HGH read more here!

What happens when children lack HGH?

Sometimes children are born with a natural deficit of HGH. This can be the result of a genetic disorder, such as Prader-Willi Syndrome or Turner Syndrome. Children suffering from these syndromes can experience not only smaller stature than their peers, but also such symptoms as increased weight, smaller feet and hands, lack of muscle tone, problems with sight, constant hunger and incomplete sexual development. As adults, they can suffer from increased risk of osteoporosis, heart and kidney problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, and loss of function in the ovaries. Children with chronic kidney insufficiency also lack the usual levels of HGH. The most common condition, though, is Growth Hormone Deficiency. According to some research, children who experience this condition can grow under two inches per year between the age of two and the onset of puberty, although their bodies may otherwise appear physically normal.

What happens when adults lack HGH?

Adults can also suffer from an HGH deficiency. Some continue to experience the genetic disorders that they were born with. In other cases, brain tumors or radiation treatment for certain types of cancer can affect the pituitary gland and cause growth hormone deficiency. Adult sufferers of short bowel syndrome can experience a loss of nutrients, which influences their HGH levels, and those with diseases such as HIV/AIDS which waste the muscles see similar effects. Adults who suffer from HGH deficiency can experience such symptoms as lack of concentration, memory and energy, increased body fat, reduced strength and sex drive, baldness in men, and greater risk of disorders such as heart disease.

Studies also show that as we age the amount of HGH produced in the brain declines significantly – in fact, according to some research it drops by as much as twenty-five percent by the time we reach our fifties. There is growing evidence that those lowered levels of HGH can contribute to some of the physical changes and health problems that are commonly considered a result of aging, like greying hair, wrinkled skin, lack of energy and sex drive, weight gain and reduced muscle tone, and even increased vulnerability to disorders such as depression, heart disease, and diabetes.

What treatments are available for children?

For children, the most widely used treatment for HGH deficiency is growth hormone injections. Originally, those injections were created with HGH taken from the pituitary glands of cadavers. However, now scientists are able to create synthetic HGH which increases the amount of the hormone in the body. More and more studies are concluding that hormone injection treatment is effective for children. However, there are a few important reminders to be considered before beginning this type of treatment.

First, HGH injections must be administered before the child reaches an age at which his or her growth plates have closed. It is not recommended that a child takes the injections if he or she has normal levels of HGH or if he or she has stopped growing. In those cases, the artificial hormone can cause the body to have too much HGH, which might create side effects such as abnormal growth of bones and organs like the liver, kidneys and heart, hardening of the arteries, and increased risk for the development of diabetes and high blood pressure. Also, the injections are only available with a doctor's prescription. Synthetic HGH obtained without a prescription is illegal, and cannot be guaranteed as a safe and effective product. Even with a prescription, the injections may be prohibitively expensive. One source says that the average annual cost can range from US$10,000 to US$30,000. In addition, since HGH is only available in the form of injections, it can be daunting for those who dislike needles. However, many manufacturers now use insulin needles, which considerably lessen the pain. Finally, HGH injections have the potential to cause serious HGH side effects ranging from minor to severe. The most common side effects include swelling, elevation in blood sugar, increased pressure in the brain, pain in joints and muscles, greater risk of infection, and mood changes. The injections have also been known to worsen scoliosis, which is a condition in which the spine curves. In extreme cases, HGH injections has been known to cause death in children with Prader-Willi Syndrome who also experienced lung infection or difficulty breathing and who were extremely overweight.

What treatments are available for adults?

For adults with short stature, the most common treatment is limb-lengthening surgery. These treatments were first introduced around the turn of the twentieth century, and since the 1970's they have continued to be refined. Limb-lengthening surgeries often make use of external fixators, which are either straight bar or circular devices that are attached to the bones with wires or pins and screws. The bone is either broken or cut with a small incision, and then these fixators pull the bone and soft tissue apart very slowly, at the rate of about one millimeter per day. This process, called distraction, allows new skin, bone, blood vessels, muscle, and nerves to form. If the bone is pulled apart too slowly, the regenerated tissue and bone material might harden, before the process is complete. This will prevent any further lengthening of the limb. If, on the other hand, the bone is pulled apart too quickly, it can cause muscle contraction or even nerve paralysis.

There are other tools besides external fixators used in limb-lengthening surgery. In some cases, doctors can also implant a metal rod into the bone marrow cavity. An external fixator is used to lengthen the bone, and then the rod is locked to the new bone with screws. This allows the bone to heal and harden, or consolidate, without the presence of the external fixator. Recently, fully implantable nails and prostheses have been developed, which are placed inside the bone to lengthen it without any need for an external fixator. The implantable devices can reduce the risk of infection and lessen pain and discomfort. However, they cannot be used in all cases. If the patient has an external fixator device, he or she must turn the device manually in order to help the bone lengthen. With implantable devices, pressure or small twists on the leg create the distraction.

Is limb-lengthening surgery successful?

In general, patients who undergo limb-lengthening surgery do succeed in adding anywhere from two to four inches to their height. A few subjects may grow by as much as six inches. However, one man who experienced the surgery and grew three inches said later that it was not worth it. Because there are very few doctors in America who perform the procedure, most patients have to travel outside the United States. Furthermore, in America the procedure costs more than $80,000, though it is slightly less expensive in other countries.

Doctors say that limb-lengthening surgery is not generally extremely painful, and that the pain can usually be controlled with medication. They also argue that it only rarely leads to medical complications. However, a number of patients have claimed that it is excruciating. In addition, a journal article from 2006 in International Orthopaedics found that complications such as uneven lengthening, hip problems, nerve damage, and even paralysis are “frequent.”

All patients must have physical therapy and regular X-rays during the treatment, and it is possible that a cast might be placed on the leg for a short time in order to prevent breakage of the bone. The surgery itself usually requires one to three days in the hospital. Distraction and consolidation can require two months of treatment time per centimeter of new bone for adults, if only an external fixator is used. The fixator itself is usually not removed until a month after X-rays show that enough calcium is present in the new bone for it to be considered healed. Even after the fixator has been removed, most patients have to wear a cast on the leg for another month for additional protection.

Are there any other treatments available for adults?

Some sources claim that exercise and fasting is a more natural way to successfully increase height than limb-lengthening surgery. They argue that intensive anaerobic, strengthening, and stretching exercises, when combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle, can help stimulate the muscles to release lactic acid, which can spark a greater generation of HGH in the body. Studies indicate that these hormones can not only help a person grow taller, but can also lessen the effects of aging and increase overall health. Stretches, hanging exercises that stretch the arms and the spine without stress, swimming, playing basketball, and riding bicycles can all contribute to the enhancement of HGH levels as well as to a generally healthy lifestyle. Strengthening and weight exercises can create more muscle mass, and help increase bone growth. Some sources even claim that rapid, high intensity sexual activity can contribute to the increase and enhancement of hormone levels.

According to some arguments, exercise can stimulate a sudden spike in HGH, which creates growth and strengthening in cells. These cells contribute to bone remodeling when they are deposited on already existing bone, lengthening it. They also help with the growth of a larger amount of cartilage around the ends of the bone to support the developing cells. They can even prevent the cartilage from disappearing as the new bone forms, so that there is room for the bone to extend further in the future.

Is this treatment successful?

The idea that exercise alone can significantly increase the height of an adult is unlikely. It is true that there are studies that indicate that a higher level of HGH in the body, generated from a combination of exercise, healthy diet and lifestyle, and the regular use of HGH supplements like Genf20 Plus, Provacyl and Sytropin HGH that stimulates the pituitary gland to naturally produce more of the hormone, can positively impact a person's health and reduce some of the effects of aging. However, that impact does not necessarily translate into greater height. Although further study may show a higher possibility of height increase resulting from HGH spikes, right now the data are mostly inconclusive.

So what can I do?

There is the possibility that limb-lengthening surgery or exercises can slightly increase height for adults, and HGH injections can increase children's heights. However, before beginning any of these treatments, talk to your doctor and decide whether the potential effects are worth it for you and your family. Exercise, a healthy diet and lifestyle, and perhaps a natural HGH supplement such as Genf20 Plus, Growth Factor Plus or Genfx can augment your overall health and make you feel younger and better, regardless of your height. In the end, the words of Dr. Seuss should remind us all that the most important thing is to feel great about yourself as a person, “no matter how small.”
