PRP Therapy Stem Cells and HGH Changing Sports Medicine

Wherever there are athletes and sports, there are going to be injuries, it really is inevitable. But recently there has been some exciting things happening on the forefront of medicine, so much so, that it is changing sports medicine and the outcomes for athletes. So what are these exciting changes? Three things actually: PRP therapy, stem cells, and HGH. Let’s delve a little deeper and look at the differences.

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy is one of the latest therapies in sports medicine. Pro sports have certainly taken notice. There are a number of stem cell therapies that include the use of adult, embryonic and umbilical stem cells. This therapy is still very experimental and in need of much more research.

One of the most talked about stem cell treatments was to Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colon who had surgery involving stem cells to help regenerate the tissue in his shoulder and elbow. The New York Times reported on this surgery and one of the reasons it received so much attention is because in the past this doctor had used HGH in procedures that were similar to this, but in this case the doctor denies use because it has since become a banned substance. However, the track record of HGH is pretty impressive, because it has been proven to speed up the healing process.

This is not witchcraft nor should a person be scared of stem cell therapy. It is certainly a different type of medical procedure that may have incredible benefits in the sports world.

PRP Therapy

The PRP therapy or Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is only new in the USA, but in Europe it has been used for many years, so unlike stem cell it’s not still considered experimental. The PRP therapy benefits are well known. The concept has been used in different forms over the years, by trying to inject irritants or into an injury to improve blood flow to the region.

PRP therapy is a fairly new treatment that helps regenerate ligaments, tendons, and cartillage. Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is now being used in sports medicine to treat athletes with injuries.

Ligaments and tendons are made from collagen fibers that when injured can become stretched or torn. We know these injuries by names such as strains, sprains or tears. These regions have blood vessels and when they become injured, bleeding from the blood vessels occurs, which is the bruising that is often seen around the injured area. How much bruising depends on how much bleeding.

Medicine has shown that when the blood flow to the area that is injured can be improved healing is also improved.  The blood brings growth factors and platelets to the region that help the tissue to heal through the creation of new collagen fibers, which are built in organized layers that create an environment where the ligaments and tendons can properly heal so that full strength and flexibility is returned.

When healing doesn’t occur correctly, and the body doesn’t create new collagen fibers then the body starts to create scar tissue.  When there is not adequate blood flow to the region this is what happens. When scar tissue develops it stops the blood flow even more, because now the capillaries and the small blood vessels are not able to get through the scar tissue to create the blood flow that’s needed to heal the injury. In these cases the injury does not heal properly.

For an athlete who has an injury that has not properly healed it can be the end of his/her career and income. Almost always, these athletes have tried all kinds of treatments such as pain medicines, anti inflammatory medicines, topical creams, massages, physical therapy, acupuncture cortisone injections, and braces, yet too often they simply don’t work. These treatments don’t address the scar tissue, poor blood flow and fiber issues.

For many athletes the don’t heal, not only are their careers gone, they now live with a disability and often they are in continuous pain. They may even try surgery. Instead, sports medicine is looking to PRP therapy as a possible solution. PRP therapy takes a draw of the athlete’s blood, which is then spun in a centrifuge machine to separate it and to concentrate the platelets that will ultimately cause the tissue to heal.

There is no risk of rejection or reaction because only a very small quantity of the concentrated platelets is injected, which is purely from your body. In order for PRP to work the sports doctor will make sure the platelets are injected in the exact location of the injury by using an ultrasound. In addition to directly injecting into the ligament or tendon, it can even be injected into tiny tears or the collagen fibers. The platelets become active when they are injected and they will bring proteins and other healing agents to the area to help rejuvenate tissue and heal the area.

HGH has been known to also improve the effectiveness of PRP therapy and to cause healing to occur much quicker so it makes sense to add  HGH to  the PRP therapy to get the maximum benefits. For more in depth info on HGH read more here!

Athletes dealing with acute injury as well as chronic injuries can benefit from PRP therapy, which is considered a more standard treatment and less experimental than stem cell therapy is at this point.

PRP therapy is commonly used to treat:

  • Achilles tendonitis and partial tears
  • Hamstring strains
  • Lateral epicondylitis
  • Medial epicondylitis
  • Patellar tendonitis and tears,
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Quadriceps tendonitis and tears
  • Rotator cuff tendonitis and partial tears

When it comes to sports medicine and the treatment of athletic injuries, PRP therapy or Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is certainly an exciting step forward in the treatment of many types of injuries, especially when it is combined with human growth hormone to speed up the healing. This means athletes can heal faster and get back to their game sooner and that’s exciting!
