Metformin as the Fountain of Youth

The search for the “Fountain of Youth” didn’t start today – it has been on for several centuries. Ponce de Leon is one of the explorers that did a lot to find it. Talk about the desire many people have for living for ever. A number of things, including HGH, have been touted as being the fountain of youth. But till today, we cannot really say this elusive secret to longevity has yet been found. The most of what we have seen are products or treatments that may help to fight signs of aging.

It is interesting then that some researchers now think Metformin, which has been available for use for several decades, could be what people have been searching for all these years. It is touted as being capable of extending lifespan up to 120 years. How true or realistic is this thinking? Let’s take a closer look at the much that is known at this time.

What is Metformin?

This is a hypoglycemic drug for managing Type 2 diabetes. It is considered probably the best oral medication for managing this condition. Metformin is said to have been developed back in 1929. Starting from the 1950s, it was marketed by the French doctor Jean Sterne. It helps diabetics by enhancing insulin sensitivity – makes the body to respond properly to this substance. The drug prevents glucose from accumulating in the liver by converting it into energy. It thus reduces the levels of sugar in the bloodstream. It is said to be more effective than insulin, sulphonylureas and alternative oral medications.

Metformin offers several other benefits, including promotion of liver health and enhancement of sexual function. It is also considered useful for treatment of gestational diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome and possibly cancer.

The First Fountain of Youth?

So far, there is nothing to suggest Metformin could help a person live longer. So what’s all the talk about it being the fountain of youth? Observation by researchers points to the possibility of the drug promoting longevity. Evidence from a number of long-term studies shows that people treated with the oral hypoglycemic agent tend to live longer than those who are given other drugs. Research involving the use of mice and worms showed Metformin reduces certain cellular changes that are associated to aging. It increases the amount of oxygen available in cells to boost strength and health.

These studies include one by a group of researchers led by Dr. Rafael de Cabo. In the trial, it was demonstrated that this anti-diabetic drug extended the lifespan of mice. The lifespan of mice who were a diet that included 0.1% Metformin increased by 5.83%. Taking a 75-year-old human being as an example, it means this drug could possibly extend their life by around four years and five months.

Another study focused on the anti-aging effect of the drug in Caenorhabditis elegans, a nematode (roundworm) that lives in temperate soil. The researchers tested 25, 50 and 100 mM Metformin on the free-living animal in the presence of E. coli. They found that the drug given at 50mM extended lifespan the longest at 36 percent.

Researchers also observed in a 2014 study that patients treated with the hypoglycemic agent lived longer than those who received sulphonylureas. This made them to suggest that it may also be useful for people who are not suffering from diabetes.

The TAME Study

It may be said that a drug will not necessarily work the same way on a human being as it would on animals. On that basis, it is suspect when someone says Metformin can make you live longer based on just evidence from mice and worm studies. But now some researchers are in the process of determining if this drug is the fountain of youth that many people have been expecting all along.

The Food and Drug Administration has given the go-ahead for the clinical trial on the anti-aging benefits of the medication. The double-blind, placebo-controlled study is tagged "Targeting Aging with Metformin" (TAME). Metformin will be administered to some 3,000 seniors who suffer from or at great risk of having heart disease, cancer, cognitive decline and other conditions of the elderly. The researchers intend to evaluate the aging process of these individuals over a period of more than six years. They will check whether the drug helped at all in preventing or slowing age-related issues.

Dr. Nir Barzilai of the Institute for Aging Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine is one of those working on the TAME study. He told Medical Economics that the aim of the clinical trial was not to target any specific condition. Rather, the researchers are interested in checking aging, which makes a person vulnerable to certain diseases. They wish to make the FDA see that aging is a valid target for investigation and research.

Perhaps, one of the things that make the prospect of Metformin highly exciting for many people is the cost. It is quite affordable in comparison to many other products currently available for fighting aging. Going by available estimate, a week supply will cost you just about $1. Isn't that just dirt cheap? Based on this, not a few persons will eagerly look forward to findings from the TAME study. It is unclear how helpful the medication might be for fighting aging until we see the outcome of that research.

For now, with all we have discussed here, Metformin doesn't really seem like the fountain of youth many expect. We mean those who literally want to live forever in particular. Evidence shows that it may add some years to your lifespan. But what it will not do is to completely halt aging. It goes without saying that it is even abnormal to expect to live forever in this world. Some experts have therefore suggested the drug should not be studied as an anti-aging solution. They think it will be better to put it forward as a remedy for healthy aging instead.
